Dagmar's Roots
The word "Dagmar" was not chosen lightly. When I was expecting my first litter of pups and my first child I was reading a book of names. I came upon the name "Dagmar" which said "the glory of the danes" and hence "Dagmar" was born. Oh, and I named my son Jackson and my 2nd son, Ross.
And my Mr. Wonderful is my husband, Don.
Best Regards,

Ah, y denominé mi hijo Jackson y a mi segundo hijo, Ross. Y mi Sr. Maravilloso es mi marido, Don.

My first dane

Although today I view myself as a very private person, through this website I share the beginning and development of a passion in my life that I never expected....The passion is a commitment to Quality in breeding the best dogs possible for balance of conformation, temperament and overall soundness.

Welcome to Dagmar

As a young girl in high school I dreamed of having a great dane. I asked my parents for one advertised in the local paper. Their reply was simply "sure you can have one when you have your own house". So, it wasn't quite a "no" answer, but it didn't leave any room for a " yes", either. I kept my hopes and dreams of having a dane quiet and to myself.

When I moved away from home about a year after graduation my first dane arrived in my life. She was a black bitch and I named her after her mother, "Duchess". With no "ear crop" budget, Duchy kept her natural ears. Duchess was purchased for $50 at 12 weeks old. This was down from the $300 I'd been watching in the paper. The ad asked for $100, but the breeder took $50 and asked me to spend the other $50 on the pup's necessities.

I took her everywhere and enjoyed talking to anyone who asked me what kind of dog this huge animal was. I began going to classes advertised in the local paper under the heading of 'dog training' to try to have a well behaved dog. She was the only dane in the class. Faithfully, I showed up every week. It wasn't until one day that I realized these "classes" were for an upcoming dog show. Well, "Duchess" wasn't a show dog and I had no aspirations at the time to show. Showing in a dog show never entered my mind...until then. But no wonder we weren't learning things like "sit", "stay", "heel" and "come".

Generally living in coastal city where water dogs are common, people would often comment and tell me what a huge black lab I had. Let me tell you there is only so much of that which a prideful dane owner can take. This is where my serious breed research began. I read everything I could get my hands on about the dane standard, studied old photos of danes past (of which I still do today), drawings, schedule of points and made it a point to know "who's who" in danes.

Upon going to dog shows (without Duchess) I met many new faces with danes that looked like the ones in the books. I also found that about 50% of the people there would chat with a novice owner such as myself, and the other 50% wouldn't give a novice the time of day. So, through these experiences I now drew the conclusion that there is a serious difference between PURE BRED and WELL BRED and not to mention good sportsmanship.

Duchess, taught me a lot about life in general. She was a wonderful friend. I also knew I wanted to become a breeder someday. I would want to strive to find and perpetuate the quality that I just didn't have in Duchess. The only true dane quality that she had was her outgoing and loving personality.

In late 1989 I acquired my first fawn at the age of 2 1/2, "Martina Anne de Tenniz" and my introduction to quality show danes of every color.

In 1991, I purchased breeding stock from the East Coast . The East Coast had what I wanted in the breed..THAT LOOK, the look of strength, majesty and soundness. From the East Coast came my Morgan & Sohni.

Morgan and Sohni produced some outstanding puppies on which my line is now under it's own development. My first brindles came along in 1995 when I bred my fawn bitch, Sohni to a brindle champion named "Baby".

After a lot of hard work, many starts and stops in the dog ring, a marriage, 2 children, breed rescue, a divorce in '96, re-doing my life and finally finding happiness with my husband, Don; I am glad to say that DAGMAR GREAT DANES is on the move with serious show contenders. We were honored to be Top Club Breeders, have Top Club Stud and Top Club Dam in 2002 through our membership of The Great Dane Club of Greater Houston.

I offer boundless dedication to this breed and think that the sport of purebred dogs is something that you must continually be open to the learning of new concepts and ideas. It is a difficult sport because you don't win based on how high you jump or how fast you run. You are subjecting your dogs to someone's opinion which can at times be harsh. I feel that as a breeder you can never stop learning and growing. I believe it to be important to offer yourself not only as a breeder, but as a mentor with each dog. Breeder's need to guide their new owners in the right direction when it comes to any need where the dogs are concerned both in puppyhood and through old age. If you find someone who claims to be a breeder and they know it all...keep looking. I've experienced both good and bad with "big time" breeders, "small time" breeders and dog show "friends" as well as buyers on an occasion or two as well. I don't want any of MY puppy people to go through all the bad stuff. I believe in being honest above all else.

The rest is still a progress in the making and I want to tell you, my visitor that I give all of myself to these dogs and have devoted the last 22+ years of my life to them. They are in my blood and I promise to be one of that 50% I mentioned that will give you the time of day. I love sharing what I know and love the many friends and extended family members these beautiful creatures have placed in my life.

How about a sample of that good bird food. So Libby goes over to Titan's bait bag. Two can play this game.

If you can start the day without caffeine,

If you can get going without pep pills,

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains,

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles,

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it,

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time,

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you when, through no fault
of yours, something goes wrong,

If you can take criticism and blame without resentment,

If you can ignore a friend's limited education and never correct him,

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend,

If you can face the world without lies and deceit,

If you can conquer tension without medical help,

If you can relax without liquor,

If you can sleep without the aid of drugs,

If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against
creed, color, religion or politics....

...Then You Are Probably The Family Dog!
